Special triple-coated professional root barrier designed to protect structures from root damage as part of intensive and extensive green roof systems.

Root Barrier Membrane

PermaSEAL PRO Green Roof Root Barrier membrane protects your primary waterproofing layer and structure from roots in a green roof system. Tough, durable and impenetrable, this triple-coated membrane offers long-term protection to your structure.

The high-quality polyethylene membrane creates a physical barrier between the green roof vegetation and the waterproofing layer. It is highly resistant to root penetration, protecting the structure from plant and tree root damage. The twin woven green roof barrier material is tear-resistant and will not break down due to alkalis, acids, organic solvents and electrolyte attack. It also helps prevent the spread of invasive plants such as Japanese Knotweed, bamboo and Mares Tail.

Available sizes

  • 1 x 25m (25m²) in individuall rolls or 10 roll bulk buy
  • 2 x 25m (50m²) in individuall rolls or 10 roll bulk buy

The green roof root barrier thickness is 0.5mm but it still has one of the highest puncture resistances on the market.

Triple-coated for ultimate protection

These barrier membranes achieve extreme puncture resistance due to a triple-coated build-up. The PermaSEAL PRO barrier has two woven layers of polyethylene, with a tough thermoplastic coating of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) sandwiched between them and then a further LDPE coating on each external surface. Essentially, you have coating, woven, coating, woven, coating to provide protection.

Uses of Root Barrier

PermaSEAL PRO Green Roof Root Barrier is suitable for both pitched and flat, intensive and extensive systems. Intensive roofs require a root protection layer to protect the structure from mechanical damage during the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the living roof.

Note: Intensive green roof designs likely to experience heavy loads will require a separation layer.

Installing a Root Barrier as part of a Green Roof System

Once a primary waterproofing layer has been applied to the concrete roof deck or screed, you can roll out the root barrier membrane across the length of the roof. Cut the barrier membrane to size.

It is possible to overlap and tape the barrier (please refer to our technical data sheet). Once in place, you need to move on to installing the drainage membrane layer on top.
