Installing an epoxy garage floor
Clean the floor thoroughly to remove dust, oil and grease as these can all reduce the bond.
With new concrete floors, it is essential to remove any laitance – this refers to the fine particles that accumulate on the surface of all new concrete floors and screeds to form a crust. You should do this by mechanical means such as a surface scrabbler, grinder or with grit blasting. Please speak with a technical advisor if unsure.
You will need the following tools and accessories:
- Drill with a 10mm chuck for the mixing paddle for mixing the epoxy
- Masking tape for non-target areas (skirting boards etc.)
- Gloves, coveralls, googles
Special primers will be required for surfaces that are exhibiting the following:
- Dampness
- Weak, dusting or flakey
- Oil or grease contamination
If your floor has any of the above please speak with our technical team.
Epoxy floor coatings are supplied in two components, the harder and the base. It is essential that you match the hardener and the base from the same product.
Once the floor is clean and if necessary primed, get the Epoxy Floor Coating Hardener and Base and remove the lids. Then carefully mix both components in their own tins, once the mix is streak free and the colour is uniform mix both components together either in the larger epoxy container or in a bucket for at least two minutes until the mix is uniform and streak free.
Apply the Epoxy Floor Paint to the edges by brush and roller the main surface. You have a pot life of approx 30-40 minutes depending on the temperature. For drying make sure adequate ventilation is available and the area will not get moist during the drying phase (Garage shutter areas). If this happens the coating may appear dull and discolored.
Two coats are required for the best results. Allow at least 24 hours to dry between coats but no more than 48 hours.
Then repeat the process with the Epoxy Floor Coating HB as a top coat and allow it to fully dry for 24 hours (foot traffic). Please note we do not suggest vehicle traffic is applied over the coating for at least 72 hours.
