Bitumen Primer

PermaSEAL Self Adhesive Bitumen Primer is designed to seal and prepare concrete and masonry surfaces prior to the installation of PermaSEAL Self-Adhesive Tanking membranes. This high performance bitumen-based priming liquid helps create the strongest bond between the substrate and your membrane for long-lasting structural waterproofing.

This bitumen primer is designed for use with self adhesive tanking membranes, both gas and tanking membranes. It is compatible with concrete and a wide-range of masonry surfaces such as natural stone, brick and block work.

Important Note: This primer is not suitable for use on Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) or similar surfaces.

Applying the primer

The self-adhesive primer is easy to apply, following these steps:

Preparation

Make sure the substrate is free from dust and other friable materials. It’s important that there’s no surface water and that the substrate is dry to touch. The aim is for a smooth surface to help you achieve maximum adhesion of the self-adhesive membrane. A suitable filler such as PermaSEAL Fillet Seal should be used if the surface is honeycombed or pitted.

Note: Wherever possible new concrete should be allowed to cure for 28 days.

Application

Apply the bitumen primer to the substrate by brush or roller. You want the substrate to be thoroughly wetted out. Exceptionally porous substrates may require two coats of the primer. If a second coat is required, only apply once the first coat is dry.

Drying time is approximately 2 to 8 hours depending on the surface and air temperature.

Coverage

Apply a single coat at a coverage rate of 6 to 8m² per litre depending on the porosity of the surface. A five litre will cover 30 - 40m².

Note: Do not use/apply if the temperature of the material, air or substrate is below +5°C or above +25 °C.
